[PS3] Current situation with loop-ending affected songs

Hi everyone, I was able to get some of the Beatles songs fixed from the loop ending. Please see the below link for the ones I was able to fix. These are the un-encrypted MIDI files that you can use to replace the existing ones and encrypt to either PAL or NTSC.

That said, I'm having trouble with the below tracks and am hoping someone can step up and provide a fixed MIDI for these:

Beatles - Poly/Bath

Beatles - I Saw Her Standing There

Beatles - Do You Want to Know a Secret?

Beatles - Yesterday

CCR - Commotion

It'd be great to get these working for the PS3 community once and for all. Also, if anyone needs instructions on how to get these fixed MIDI's setup and on your system, feel free to PM me.

I will post several times so that each one is not overly long.

All these songs have the loop ending issue. I tried correcting them by using the 'fix looping' option in Con Tools. This did not work in the majority of cases. Also, except for a couple, Song Analyzer did not indicate that the midi length was longer than the song length. I'm not convinced this is the issue. The major problem I see is that the Beat track seems to extend past when all the instrument have stopped playing. I reduce the [end] statement in the Event track back to within a beat of when this occurs and then remove the extra beats on the beat track.

True by Spandau Ballet

Back on the Chain Gang by Pretenders

Handle with Care by Travelling Wilburys

Money for Nothing by Dire Straits

were all fixed by the 'fix loop' method.

Smells like Nirvana by Weird Al

When Will I Be Loved by Ronstadt

Stacy's Mom by Fountains of Wayne

I could not fix. 'fix loop' method did not work. 'Fix Mogg' method did not work. Several attempts at fixing in Reaper did not work. I looked at Weird Al songs that had no issue and nothing jumped out at me why Smells Like Nirvana looped.

The other thing I cannot wrap my head around is why does the PS3 have this problem? I know that all of the songs are done for the xbox, and I have always presumed that they do in fact work correctly on xbox.

Does the xbox interpret the mid file differently? Is there a timing issue when we do the conversion to PS3? If the PC is under heavy load, might the conversion glitch at some point? Is this why only some people seem to have some issues with some songs?

Anyway, on to the next post.

My theory is that PS3 uses the length information embedded in the audio file to stop playback, while xbox simply plays the audio until the actual end of file.

There used to be a bug in Magma which (if I remember right) caused an incorrect length of the audio file to be written in the audio file header, even if the actual audio in the file is not cut.

The game exits instead when it reaches the [end] event in the midi file. So my (lousy) theory is that the PS3 audio playback maybe gets confused by the audio length. Maybe it thinks the song audio is ending already, while the game hasn't encountered the [end] midi event yet and doesn't want to stop, so it jumps backwards in a loop.

The C3 Tools "fix looping" often restores the correct length in the audio header, but sometimes it doesn't succeed.

If you rebuild the audio in Magma, you always get the correct length. But if the audio is multitrack and encrypted, it will be reduced to single-track when you extract it before rebuilding. For Beatles customs (which are encrypted multitrack) I figured out the previously described method of moving the [end] event backwards to make the game quit before panicking. But it is very possible that in some particular customs, the length in the audio file is cut short to even before the last notes, making it impossible to move the [end] event back enough to avoid the loop.

Remember however that if you have a single track custom (or an unencrypted multitrack) you don't need to change the midi, just rebuild in Magma and it always works because the old bug at the root of this problem was fixed years ago.

So I opened Magma(yaa, something new to learn), and dragged Smell Like Nirvana onto it. It extracted everything, and then said that the mogg file was encrypted. I then tried 3 Marlenas. Also encrypted. Both of these are single track audio. Is this an authoring option? or is there something else I need to do? Magma also asked for my Authoring ID, which it said was on my profile, but the number on the profile was not accepted.

You need to use the Phase Shift Converter in the C3 CON Tools. It will extract the audio (reducing it to single-track if not already) to mp3 format. Then use this audio to replace the encrypted one in Magma. It will be perfectly aligned with the tempo map of the midi.

Hey Shroud

sorry to bug you again.

When I use Phase Shift, it has 'Use guitar.ogg' as a default option. If I run it without that checked, it creates something called song.ogg. They are different sizes. Is there a difference in using one over the other.

Also when I run Magma, it automatically creates a wav file from the ogg file, so if I used an existing wav file, it would just use that I guess.

When I hit create it said that the Dry Vocal track sample rate had to be at 16khz. There is an option on the Phase Shift Converter about Downmix to Stereo Quality. It was defaulted to 5, should it be something different to get it to 16KHz?

thanks again

Ah, I forgot about the dryvox files... I am not sure I remember right but I think the dryvox files are used by Magma to generate lipsync animations, but the actual dryvox files do not end up to the CON, so they can't be retrieved from it.

You can create fake dryvox files using Reaper: load the wave file to Reaper (to nail the correct length), mute it, and RENDER it with the appropriate bitrate required for dryvox.

When you build in Magma, a fake (empty) dryvox won't generate the lipsync animations correctly. But your current purpose is only to get the MOGG audio file (with fixed length) out of Magma, not the rest of the files like midi and animations... you already have them! Once you get the MOGG, replace it into the CON.

I should be able to check all this out better tomorrow, in case I still forgot something.

Ah, now I see. Anyway, I created a new wav file at 16KHz mono for the dryvox in Goldwave and it worked.

Smell Like Nirvana, When Will I Be Loved and Stacy's Mom all work now.

Mind sending along any CON files you fixed? I may fix the dry vox on some if they're not generating proper lipsync animations, but you'd be saving me some steps if you'd send the CONs along. :)

I can send you the modified mid files. You can send me a pm with your email and I can send them to you. I do not have access to a 'cloud' site for d/l.

Cool, I'll just download them once Shroud has them posted!
