Broken dryvox in a certain spot, and how to implement rhythm guitar

Let's kill two birds with one stone, shall we?

I'm wrapping up Post Break-Up Sex by the Vaccines and during one long vocal note the lip sync isn't taking effect. I've queued up the following YouTube video to the point in question:

https://youtu.be/dU9hrd35Dsg?t=2m3s

During the long uh-huh-huuuuuuuh-uhhhhhhhhhh the lip sync just... stops. It starts off working fine, but the vocalist shuts his mouth early. And it ruins it for me. I'm unsure if this is because I'm a Wii user or if it's something else...

The dryvox lip sync works absolutely wonderfully and perfectly for the entire song except here in this one spot. The only thing special about that spot is the length of the note. I can't figure out what's up with this. :( Please help! :)

Second question!

For this song, I charted rhythm guitar to the keys. But how do I make Magma happy when implementing the normal-keys-only part? There is no pro keys part (obviously). I've never had to do this because I've always had either no keys at all or normal and pro keys.

I am assuming I simply don't export those MIDI tracks from Reaper. That's what I had to do earlier with the vocals since there were no harmonies, and this was (somehow) the first time I'd ever worked on a song without harmonies. Magma got mad when I had empty HARM1/2/3 charts, but when I muted those tracks and re-exported, Magma didn't complain. Will it be the same if I only want normal keys and no pro keys?

Thanks in advance!

For the dry vox, the thing they use to make the mouth movements is meant for talking and not really for singing. So many times it won't give 100% accurate mouth movements even from a perfect dry vox. There's no real way around this but besides making a new dry vox that you only talk into, but even then it might not work. If that's the only point of the song where it doesn't work, you actually have a really good dry vox to begin with.

As for the keys, you need to de-select the pro keys option in the difficulties section and leave fake pro keys chart and animations on. I'm failry certain you don't need to export blank pro keys and animations midi tracks but it wouldn't hurt to do so. If you don't have harmonies you don't need to export any of the harmonies tracks.

It's like i0brendan0 said. There will always be some parts where lipsync doesn't work correctly. My advice is to keep the dryvox as clear as you can and the volume low, but not too low, or else the whole lipsync will be defective.

Usually if this doesn't work for me, I hide it through camera cuts. :haw:

I'm not so sure about that - I think whoever wrote the lipsync tool must have had a voice similar to mine.  I've never noticed a problem, even on songs with long sustains like the oohs at the end of "Mr. Blue Sky".

@Atruejedi: send me a PM if you want a little snippet of dry vox to splice in there  :D

Interesting... In every custom I've had at least one glitch in the lip movements. Maybe it's the way the voice is recorded? What's your way of doing it, please? :D

I sing into the microphone.   :D

That's why I suspect whoever wrote it has a similar voice - no magic has ever been required.  I have a relatively typical baritone range, with a bit of a scratchy undertone.

These days I use a Shure SM48 into a Behringer mixer, which feeds into a Behringer UCA202 USB audio interface, and REAPER is configured to use it via ASIO4ALL.  I usually normalize each section of the dryvox (ctrl+shift+N in REAPER), just to make sure the levels are consistent.

Can I (completely joking) pay you to dry vox for my songs without stems that need dry vox? Again completely joking :P

I'm using a pretty good USB condenser microphone and haven't ever had a problem with dryvox (for all two of my releases :P ) before now. This part is driving me nuts, but it's less frustrating now that I'm recording directly in Reaper instead of Audacity (so if you offered advice in that other thread, thanks!).

If these issues are fairly common for other authors, I consider myself blessed so far. My method is to find whatever key the song is in and simply sing the entire song at that same single note. I've been really impressed with the lip sync until now. So once I leap this hurdle, I should have smoothing sailing again... for a while, at least.

The vocalist's mouth is now staying open for a bit more time, but it still isn't perfect. And I'm going to be pissed if I fix it on my Wii by singing for a longer amount of time... and then his mouth doesn't shut for Xboxers >:(

[Edit] Oh, great. Now, for that section I recorded directly in Reaper, he isn't even opening his mouth. It shuts and stays shut for that section. No idea why. I rendered the file as usual and checked to see if the changes took effect and they did.

This. Is. Infuriating.

I'd be happy to send dryvox files for any author that needs it.

I'm desperate. I don't know if something suddenly changed in my hardware/software setup, but I find it so peculiar that, suddenly, Reaper and Magma aren't "registering" the newly-recorded section of dryvox, even though it's obviously there. The wavelength does look different, which is odd...

Until I can figure this out, yeah, I'll take your donation. All I need is those uh-huh-huhs linked to above. Particularly, the last little section with the longest sustain. Everything else works.

Thank you in advance, and does anybody have any clue why this would be happening to me? :(

I'm curious as well. Running into the same issue, but mine is at the beginning. No one will open their mouth. Drvyvox is clean and I've done a dozen different recordings AND even used the portion from the original as it was clean at the beginning. Still....nothing. And what's worse is it's the same lines that are sung mid song, and the sync is perfect.

Our joint misery is comforting, especially because I was worried this might be a Wii-only issue. So thank you for chiming in!

I totally cheated and created events that just ensured it wasn't focusing on anyone until the sync kicked in. Lame I know, but just wanted this custom out the door.

Yeah, at this point, screw it.

Nyxyxylyth sent me a snippet of himself singing that section with the hopes that it would render the lip sync properly, but it still didn't. In a way, I'm relieved that it isn't just me... but it still doesn't answer what the problem is.

Is it my Wii?

Is it the custom?

Is it the compilation process?

Etc., etc., etc.

But at least Nyx's clip keeps the mouth open, even if not for the entire duration, because I'm burnt out and don't feel like figuring out why my newly recorded snippet is just completely broken now. I'll just cut to a far-out angle and call it a day. I've hit the point of diminishing returns.

Thanks to all for your assistance. Cheers!

Ya. I'm guessing if Pavarotti himself sent me a snippet, it wouldn't work. Something in compilation or some stupid thing I've done in the file is preventing the engine from understanding there is something to sing there. But alas, I ain't with HMX and can't ask their programmers wuz up? So we make do, n'est pas? I'm sure it'll be great. Plus, get that custom OUT! Been waiting for someone to do Home in like FOREVER. =-)

This could be completely wrong, but I sometimes wonder if the game (in the Wii version, at least) reduces or disables the singer's lip-sync sometimes depending on the camera distance and angle to save on processing. If this is happening on a close-up shot, it may be something else though.
