"Shit so thick you could stir it with a stick..."

I'm not going to spend a lot of time talking about R.E.M. You know them. I love them. Today's going to be a good day because I'm finally releasing this son of a bitch.

joW9IR9.jpg

Click here to go to the database entry.

This Rock Band 3 custom song, Bad Day by R.E.M., is my twenty-fourth release and joins a bunch of other customs by the band available in the database. You probably have a number of them in your library. Good! You have tolerable taste.

michael_stipe_ofrem.jpeg

But you don't taste as good as Peak Stipe.

R.E.M. was not featured in my suggestions thread because Harmonix and the customs community have already spoiled us with so many great tunes. But there are more great tunes out there in need of charting, so this is my contribution. But I definitely didn't do it alone!

[Gameplay video]

Features:

Fully custom venue from scratch

Vocal chart from scratch

Dryvox lip sync for all three vocal parts

Vocal tonic note

Reductions for all instruments

Numeric ID for Wii leaderboards (Song ID 649200024)

Guitar by Kicho

Bass by grubextrapolate

Drums by grubextrapolate and Whizzer

This song originally appeared in the database as a guitar-only chart by Kicho converted for Rock Band 3 by beard216. It was consistently requested on the forums that it be full-banded, and I figured, hey, I might as well step up and service a band I've loved for many years.

In fact, I just saw an R.E.M. tribute band called The Reckoning a few weeks ago and they were fantastic. The band sounded exactly like the real deal and their Stipe was pretty Stipey, but not perfect. Their setlist was awesome, too, because they played so many deep cuts and fan favorites, treating the audience as if they were hardcore fans... which we were! But I digress...

Michael-Stipe-2016-billboard-1548.jpg

You're all pieces of shit.

beard sent me this custom's Reaper file upon my request and soon after I posted it at the very bottom of my WIP thread so as to demonstrate its low priority status, grubextrapolate hit me up and said he'd be interested in contributing. His enthusiasm pushed this custom to the top of my list and, well, here we are. But there are more collaborators to name!

grub handled the bass part on his own, but he was helped in his drums-charting effort by none other than Whizzer and TheWay123. Without them, this custom would not shine as brightly as it does. A heartfelt thanks to the both of them for their generosity.

I tweaked Kicho's guitar part very slightly by moving a few gems and adding hammer-ons, but he (or she) deserves the vast majority of the credit. The vocals are my baby, though. And I say confidently these are the most fun harmonies I've charted in a long, long time. Get three vocalists together and go to town! The venue and dryvox hopefully do the song justice. Oh, and shout-out to BornGamerRob for his tuning-cents tip, which saved me a lot of agony and experimentation...

If you'd like to contribute improvements or animations or if you have suggestions for how I can do better, please contact me. Thanks for reading! Take a picture!

"Sugar, you don't know what you're missin'..."

Everybody knows Fountains of Wayne because everybody knows their smash-hit Stacy's Mom. But did you know they're actually a decent band beyond that song? It's true! Many of their tunes ride that fine line of cute-but-not-too-cheesy and the cleverly crafted lyrics go perfectly with the pop-rock sensibilities of the band. The best example of that earworm-that-can't-be-extracted is featured below.

89iERgh.jpg

Click here to go to the database entry.

This Rock Band 3 custom song, Traffic and Weather by Fountains of Wayne, is my twenty-fifth release and the third song by the band in the database... but the first proper full-band custom! musicalfatties gave Hey Julie a go, but it lacks pitched vocals. Nonetheless, when he posted that custom in the database, I immediately contacted him about collaborating on this song!

Fountains-of-Wayne-resize.jpgI remember it just like it was yesterday... if yesterday was February 6, 2004. Oh my god.

I don't remember exactly how I got into Fountains of Wayne, but it was only within the past two or three years that I ever listened to anything that wasn't Stacy's Mom (which I am just as sick of as you are) and, boy, I'm glad I did. Their catalogue has some real gems in it, hence their inclusion in my suggestions thread. And the only reason I chose Traffic and Weather over Obvious Choice Radiation Vibe is because charting the former was a much less daunting task and it's catchier... even if it's pretty darned basic on all instruments.

[Gameplay video]

Features:

Fully custom venue from scratch
Vocal chart from scratch
Dryvox lip sync for both vocal parts
Vocal tonic note
Reductions for all instruments
Numeric ID for Wii leaderboards (Song ID 649200025)
Reverse-fadeout audio
Guitar by musicalfatties and TheWay123
Drums by musicalfatties and Whizzer
Pro keys by TheWay123

Initially, I thought the main reason to download this song would be to sing it, and the perfectly charted vocals are a real treat. The bass chart is very repetitive, but I still dig it, especially as something to play while singing. The drum chart, initially charted by musicalfatties and improved upon by Whizzer, is pretty repetitive as well, but the fills (Whizzer's babies) look and sound very fun to non-drummer me.

After I played the guitar chart, though, I realized it's just as stand-out as the vocals. While nothing challenging, it's varied and enjoyable. musicalfatties charted the initial guitar part which was completely overhauled by TheWay123, who did an excellent job, and to whom I extend my sincere thanks. I sat on this custom for a very long time awaiting a worthy guitar chart I knew I couldn't handle crafting, and TheWay delivered! Just as dependable as weather on the eights.

Not only that, but TheWay also, just for funsies, sent me a pro keys chart of the synthesizer to include in the custom. I had no plans to include keys or pro keys because they're so sparse, but since he went to all that trouble (well, 30 minutes, according to the man himself) I slapped 'em into the custom and tweaked the venue to include a keyboardist. The venue itself is pretty basic, but I think it fits the song. It gets trippy when trippy is called for.

The album version of the song fades out, so I reversed the fade-out as best I could and changed it to a pretty convincing crisp ending. It could be better, but diminishing returns 'n' all. If you don't know the song to begin with, I doubt you'd notice my little edit. So kudos to me.

If you'd like to contribute improvements or animations or if you have suggestions for how I can do better, please contact me. Thanks for reading! Now that you've heard what I say, go ahead and run away, baby. Or let me stroke your hair. Please.

"I always kinda, sorta wished that I was someone else..."

We anchor ourselves to some songs. They become our favorites. We hear them often, even when we aren't listening to them. For me, it's this song, from a band and album introduced to me by a former lover who was cheating on her husband. Her man later told me that he preferred American Slang because he thought it was more personal and about a failed marriage. Irony. Only much later did he agree that The '59 Sound is the slightly superior album. They're both much happier now. I hope. Anyway, enough salacious story lines. Onto the custom!

ovyPQb0.jpg

Click here to go to the database entry.

This Rock Band 3 custom song, High Lonesome by The Gaslight Anthem, is my twenty-sixth release and only the first of a few coming down the pipe from a collaboration between me and TomGuy. But exercise patience, reader... it'll be a while. But it'll be worth the wait, I assure you.

gaslightanthem230712w.jpg

No loitering.

I should point out I listen to a wide variety of music and don't really fixate on particular artists or albums often. I like variety. I queue something up and when it's done I put on something else that's usually headed in the other musical direction. So it's profound that I've scrobbled this song 140 times in the past nine years. Something about it really resonates with me, be it the referential lyrics or the hard-hitting dreams of what-if. Which layers on s'more irony. But I digress again...

Features:

Fully custom venue from scratch

Vocal chart from scratch

Guitar by TomGuy

Drums by TomGuy

This custom has been a long time a'comin'. The seeds were planted when TomGuy posted his custom of the Gaslight Anthem song "45" in the database without pitched vocals. The injustice! I got in touch with him, pitched the vocals, added harmonies, and we became besties. We've worked together on a number of projects since then, but this release has always been the one. It's what I've wanted to release since day one. It just took a long time to get it all done and done right.

Tom laid the groundwork for this one by sending me a tempo map with a completed guitar chart. I immediately pitched the vocals, but then the Reaper project collected cobwebs for about a year. Tom had these lofty plans to release the entire '59 Sound album on its 10th anniversary (which fell last October). I told him, hey, I love Gaslight, but dude, I don't know if I would want to work on an entire album when there are so many other deserving artists who need my time and effort. Since then, Tom has realized it's better to just get 'er done one by one and out the door. He still wants to chart the whole album, and I wish him luck. He'll need it! Since that'll be a long way off, I cajoled him into turning this song over to me because I knew I could finally complete the production and hopefully do the tune justice. I now cockily say I did indeed do it justice. I've created a venue I'm extremely proud of, and the lipsync cooperated pretty easily this time. This custom is DLC-quality stuff. Maybe I should send it Brian Fallon's way...

Tom's drum and guitar charts are suitably difficult and intense. This is not a song I'd want to voxtar, but I'll probably try just that anyway sometime in the near future and pass with crashing colors. It's hard to concentrate on two awesome things at once! And playing this bass part while singing wouldn't be much easier on me...

There are harmonies in this song... for one phrase. It felt kind of deceptive marking it in the database as two vocal parts, but technically it is. You only get one shot, so don't blow it.

If you'd like to contribute improvements or animations or if you have suggestions for how I can do better, please contact me. Thanks for reading! Now grab your suitcase and get out.

"And I don't bitch and whine if I don't get my way..."

If you're a lucky enough author, there comes a time when you release a first "second song" by a certain group. That group must be something special, right? Hey, they don't call them the Legendary Roots Crew for nothin'. Let's do this.

RS7aQt6.jpg

Click here to go to the database entry.

This Rock Band 3 custom song, The Seed 2.0 by The Roots, is my twenty-seventh release and joins a number of drums-only customs by tonedef in the database, but it's only the second full-band Roots tune available. It's been brought to you by the same talented collaborators that brought the first, What They Do, to life.

hip-hop-questlove-the-roots-groups-706x4

Dapper as !@#$.

I sat on this custom for so long after tonedef sent me the drum chart and mangolatango contributed the guitar chart. I was keeping it for a rainy day because I knew I could blast through the bass and vocal charts pretty quickly, so if I ever had a streak I wanted to maintain, I could crack this bitty out over the course of a week or so. Since I've released three songs in the previous three days, I wanted to hit that 4x multiplier and this was my weapon of choice.

[Gameplay video]

Features:

Fully custom venue from scratch

Vocal chart from scratch

Dryvox lip sync for both vocal parts

Vocal tonic note

Reductions for all instruments

Numeric ID for Wii leaderboards (Song ID 649200027)

Guitar by mangolatango

Drums by tonedef

I definitely white-washed the band with the gameplay video, but I did choose my afro-sporting bad-ass to represent Questlove, my Southerner with swagger to be Black Thought, and the eccentric arena rocker to play Cody Chesnutt. I think they do them enough justice!

If you're familiar with the music video and pay close attention to my custom venue, I used the photo_negative processing effect every time they did so in the genuine article. I thought it would spice it up a bit, and it actually did! I'm really pleased with the venue and the lip sync, and I hope it brings a smile to your face as well!

cody_photo_wide-348c7b77eef62e408265970d

Nothing eccentric about this...

mangolatango's guitar chart is, as usual, a real pleasure to play, especially if you're going to sing the pitched part. If you're rapping Black Thought's verses, I wouldn't recommend it, but I'd love to see a video of that! tonedef's drum chart should do Questlove justice and make you feel awesome. My bass chart is pretty, well, basic, but it has its moments, especially near the end. Shout-out to grubextrapolate for giving my bass chart a once-over and making sure it was up to snuff. :)

The rapping vocals should be charted well enough and be easy enough to perform, but Chesnutt's singing is actually pretty absurd. I charted nearly every slide the man rips through, so you'll be hard-pressed to do as well as him! I adjusted the tuning cents by -40, and I hope that did the job. Again, I'd love to see a video of somebody singing this! Or singing it and rapping it!

If you'd like to contribute improvements or animations or if you have suggestions for how I can do better, please contact me. Thanks for reading! Now go spread your seed.

"Word power can plow through acres of cornfields..."

If you think I'm a music snob when it comes to rock 'n' roll, oh boy, you'll hate me when it comes to hip-hop. I'm even more insufferable. And it all started with this song...

Db2KUR2.jpg

Click here to go to the database entry.

This Rock Band 3 custom song, What's Golden by Jurassic 5, is my twenty-eighth release and the first jam by the sextet to enter the database. It was produced in the past week by grubextrapolate and me because he found it in my suggestions thread and expressed interest in charting it with me in the future. Well, the future is now.

GettyImages-485213928-e1522470604492-793

Four MCs and two DJs. They be gettin' down with no delay.

Here's a quote from my suggestions thread about how this song changed my life and how that happened:

In 2003, I went to Circuit City to purchase the Road to Rome expansion pack for Battlefield 1942 (you know, in the era before nickel-and-diming DLC). At the check-out, the cashier asked me if I would like to purchase a music video sampler DVD (you know, before Blu-Ray) for one penny. One penny!? Of course I would! I only remember one song featured on that DVD, the Obvious Choice below, but it genuinely changed my life. That song introduced me to the world of underground hip-hop. I'd never heard anything like Jurassic 5. Four MCs, two DJs, and endless heart. From that moment forward I couldn't appreciate, respect, or enjoy rappers like Jay-Z or Puff Daddy. It's like going back to eating tuna fish after finally tasting caviar. For better or worse, the snob I am today was born on that fateful February afternoon. Some musicians sell their souls. I bought mine for a penny.

Music p-p-power.

[Gameplay video]

Features:

Fully custom venue from scratch

Vocal chart from scratch

Dryvox lip sync for all three (four?) vocal parts

Vocal tonic note

Reductions for all instruments

Numeric ID for Wii leaderboards (Song ID 649200028)

Drums by grubextrapolate

Vocally, the song is dope, if you can keep up with the lyrics (especially the first verse... damn, Soup!). The refrain is pitched in my Reaper file, but I unpitched it for the custom because I thought it would be more fun if you didn't have to either (a.) sing really low and struggle or (b.) sing really high and ruin the vibe.

In my suggestions thread, I said the bass part was repetitive. I was wrong. Yes, it sounds that way to your ears if you aren't listening closely, but once I charted the song I realized that if you get lazy, you're gonna break combo because, seemingly at random, notes will be left out or have a different pitch. It's actually really clever, and knowing this now makes me appreciate the song even more.

The drum chart is courtesy of grubextrapolate and throws a few timing curveballs at you throughout, so be careful. Still, besides the kick pedal, it seems like a part even I could drum. Cool! Now, if I could bust out Akil's verse while I do it...

I fleshed out the keyboard part as best I could. I didn't want to straight-up copy the bass chart, so any sound I thought could be charted to keys is charted to keys. If you have suggestions on how to alter the chart and make it more fun or interesting, hit me up. If any of the gem positions are off, I'm also open to tweaking that. I had grub go through it for me so it should be playable, at the very least!

If you'd like to contribute improvements or animations or if you have suggestions for how I can do better, please contact me. Thanks for reading! Now go rage and roll on stage.

"You may call it suicide but I'm being born again..."

Some bands are just cool. You want to tell your friends about them, absolutely certain in your recommendation. Sharing is caring, after all, and how couldn't they like this band? To you, dear reader, I recommend Kasabian. To dip your toe into their sonic, psychedelic swimming pool, here is one of their most popular and best songs.

HblbS38.jpg

Click here to go to the database entry.

This Rock Band 3 custom song, Days Are Forgotten by Kasabian, is my twenty-ninth release and the third custom featuring the band to hit the database, along with the two official Harmonix releases from their debut and sophomore albums. Kasabian only recently (okay, 14 months ago, but that's still relatively recently) entered my suggestions thread as a wishlist entry as soon as I realized I would be publishing my own customs. Days Are Forgotten was my top pick and production began in May of 2018, with mangolatango providing the tempo map and guitar chart. Whizzer charted the drums and I followed up with the bass and vocals. And then...

original.jpg

The brains behind the operation. And a vision of the future.

...my hard drive died. !@#$

This really sapped my motivation to do any charting related to this song. I had just finished the vocals and was finally pleased with the bass part, and I lost them both. So I moved on to other customs and let mango's and Whizzer's works sit idle, collecting cobwebs.

Flashback to 2012: Kasabian was traveling across the ocean to the United States of America. They were only playing a handful of big cities, but one of those cities was only a six-hour train ride away, so a friend I had introduced to the band (and who subsequently and unexpectedly fell in love with them) and I made the journey to see Kasabian, honestly worried that their unique energy would cause a split before we ever got the chance to see them closer to home. Something that burns so brightly rarely glows for long.

The concert was fantastic (beyond a pair of idiots who kept screaming "PROCESSED BEATS!" between every song for the entire fucking show). And, inexplicably, Kasabian didn't break up. In fact, they're still around and making good music. I sort of forgot about them for a while, and then, when I discovered their most recently released album that evaded my radar, I fell back in love with them and it inspired me to get my ass moving on getting this song released.

Fully custom venue from scratch
Vocal chart from scratch
Dryvox lip sync for all three vocal parts
Vocal tonic note
Reductions for all instruments
Numeric ID for Wii leaderboards (Song ID 649200029)
Guitar by mangolatango
Drums by Whizzer

Here's where things get interesting: remember how I lost all that work? Well, that delayed the release of this song for 10 months, but in the meantime I got pretty darned good at creating custom venues... and I realized, when constructing the venue for the resurrected Days Are Forgotten, that there was a pattern to the venue imperfections showcased on the Wii. Lighting and camera cuts at the beginning of the song came in a bit too early, and by the end of the song, events were happening a full measure late. Somewhere in the middle, things would be perfect, but not for long.

I had this vision for exactly how I wanted Days Are Forgotten's venue. I refused to compromise. I sent grubextrapolate a test version for his PlayStation and he confirmed it was working as I intended. Then I made my own Wii version. But this didn't make me happy. Even more work? Ugh.

I complained in the authors' Discord and lamented the Wii's shortcomings. This led to a conversation between me and StackOverflow0x, the creator of MiloMod, which I habitually use to prepare all of my converted CON files for use on the Wii. Well, as it turns out... there was a rounding error in MiloMod. A song with a beats-per-minute of 104.99, for example, would round down to 104, instead of up to 105. But rounding is bad no matter what! This led to a cascade effect that ruined any venue I tried to make. And when I compensated to make it good on my Wii, I was inadvertently and unwittingly ruining it for everybody else!

I spent so much time in the past year perfecting venues I simply couldn't perfect because I was fighting mathematics. I'm pleased to announce that Stack has fixed that problem. From here on out, I'll save so much time testing my creations that my release schedule will definitely benefit (so you will benefit, too, player!). But first, I have to go back and re-release (and even re-re-release!) all twenty-eight of my other customs. I had slowly been rolling out anniversary updates in the past month or so, but paused all production when I learned that a fix for MiloMod was in the works. Thanks to these recent MiloMod developments, I will now be able to release definitive versions of my customs... or at least as close to definitive as possible.

Anyway, about the custom. The venue is dope. Watch the video above, damn you. The drums are super intense at the end. The ending itself is truncated with a reverse-fade, so drummers can love or hate me for stopping the song just when things get really interesting. The guitar and bass are neat. I pitched all the vocals, but I chose to unpitch a good number of them because of the way the words are sung. I thought this would increase the fun factor. If you think this was a bad choice, I'm open to your feedback!

If you listen really, really closely, you'll hear some backing vocals I didn't chart. They are charted when they are prominent, but I wasn't going to surprise and torture vocalists with nearly-phantom harmonies.

Shout-out to grubextrapolate for his feedback on the bass chart and testing the venue, setting in motion the MiloMod revision event.

Shout-outs to Whizzer and mangolatango for waiting, oh, nearly a year for this to be released. Whizzer says it gave him time to improve his drum chart, so I guess it was all worth it!

Huge, huge shout-out to StackOverflow0x. Without this guy, I probably wouldn't be playing customs on my Wii. And without that, I wouldn't have become an author. And now, thanks to him again, I am able to become a better author. Creating customs is a hobby very dear to me, and I cannot stress how instrumental (derp) Stack has been in enabling this journey. Thank you!

"Night driving without headlights. Wearin' sunglasses, too..."

You'll find no pranks here. Instead, have a bad-ass tune to acknowledge April Fool's Day.

This Rock Band 3 custom song, April Fool by Soul Asylum, is my thirtieth custom and part of a trio of Soul Asylum songs I've now released in collaboration with grubextrapolate, another big fan of the band. So scratch off another request from my suggestions thread.

130722-Soul-ASylum-20-Years-Ago-640x426.

Smoking is cool.

This song is probably pretty unknown 'round these parts, but I hope releasing it on April Fool's Day will give it the attention it deserves. It showcases lead singer/songwriter Dave Pirner's skills in crafting lyrics across a wide spectrum of styles. Compare it to my other releases and marvel at his creative range.

Features:
Fully custom venue from scratch
Vocal chart from scratch
Dryvox lip sync for all three vocal parts
Vocal tonic note
Reductions for all instruments
Numeric ID for Wii leaderboards (Song ID 649200030)
Guitar by grubextrapolate
Drums by grubextrapolate

I initially didn't have plans on tackling this song (one of my personal favorites by the band) but I had a "Eh, why not?" moment when grubextrapolate and I were fleshing out another Soul Asylum song (featured in the next post!) in collaboration with Whizzer. As we wrapped up production, I realized I'd be releasing that song sometime around the end of March. "Might as well make it April 1st and throw April Fool into the mix! And update Runaway Train while I'm at it. Hell, make it a three pack! And Dave's birthday is in April, so there's more justification!" Happy birthday, Mr. Pirner.

As always, I'm particularly proud of the custom venue. I used so many animation flags to toggle back and forth between idle, mellow, and intense, and the level of polish shows in the preview video. I wanted to create something to properly compliment the awesome instrument charts from grub! Hopefully this song will have you feelin' too cool for school. Good luck with those vocals, though. Yikes.

I do want your opinion, so I'll ask ya right here. And if you'd like to contribute improvements or animations or if you have suggestions for how I can do better, please contact me. Thanks for reading!

"Caterpillar crawling up the big phone pole--

is there somebody that you want to talk to?"

I think Dave Pirner is a lyrical genius. The line above is very appropriate, because this song gives me butterflies.

This Rock Band 3 custom song, Closer to the Stars (live) by Soul Asylum, is my thirty-first custom and part of a trio of Soul Asylum songs I've now released in collaboration with grubextrapolate, another big fan of the band. Two boxes checked in my suggestions thread in one day!

Winona was a lucky girl.

I have a feeling customs of live songs are often overlooked by the community, and I hope that won't be the case here. The performance of this song is something special. It was recorded live at The Palais Royale in Toronto on April 3, 1995, so it'll be 24 years old in a mere two days! You can see that performance here if you're curious, or just watch the preview video to hear the magic.

Features:
Fully custom venue from scratch
Vocal chart from scratch
Dryvox lip sync for the only vocal part
Vocal tonic note
Reductions for all instruments
Numeric ID for Wii leaderboards (Song ID 649200031)
Guitar by grubextrapolate
Drums by Whizzer

I had always wanted to chart this song, and when Whizzer said something about somehow enjoying tempo mapping live or lively songs, I seized the opportunity to get this one going. He even threw in a drums chart for good measure!

For the guitar part I recruited grubextrapolate, who had never heard this particular rendition of the song (which is vastly better and totally different than the original album version from years earlier!) but fell in love with it just as I had. Dare I say this song might be better than Runaway Train, which I also adore. I find both absolutely amazing.

This is one of those rare releases from me featuring only one vocal part, but that sole part has soul. Bring that emotion to your performance, baby. I crafted the venue to fit the atmosphere of the song, and I hope I do it justice!

Unfortunately, nobody bit when we tried to recruit somebody to chart the organ part, but it should still be a very pleasant full-band experience. Scratch that! Keys and pro keys added in version 2, courtesy of Buster66!

It's here! The song of the summer! The anthem!... of 2017.

This Rock Band 3 custom song, The Man by The Killers, is my thirty-second release and one of many Killers songs available in the database as a custom. But it's definitely one of their most unique songs, especially if you aren't too familiar with the band. This song doesn't really fit with the rest of the album, or, for that matter, any of their previous singles... except their Christmas originals. 'Tis the season, I guess.

I got to see Brandon Flowers perform his solo material after the release of his second album, but I've yet to see all of the Killers live. Luckily, Brandon did a good mix of his own stuff and the band's music. It was awesome. The man is an immaculate performer. The Killers Live from the Royal Albert Hall concert DVD is one of my favorite performances to watch. I mean, come on. Look at this guy.

Who's the man? Who's the man? He's the man! He's the man!

This tongue-in-cheek song is full of genuine swagger and is the perfect fit for any Rock Band party you throw. Fingers crossed that Harmonix doesn't release this, but even if they do, they'd be hard-pressed to surpass the quality stuffed into this custom. Plus, we've got pro keys! Come at us, bro.

All instrument charts by Chainsaw Octopus

"Us?" Yes, us! This custom was brought to you in collaboration with Chainsaw Octopus, who did, oh, basically everything. He dropped a Reaper file in my lap with charts for guitar, bass, drums, and keys. Granted, I made significant alterations to the guitar and bass charts, but he did all the important groundwork and made my life way easier. This let me crack out the vocals and venue in a lot less overall time, so here we are, two weeks later! A big-shout out to him. He's always fun to work with, and basically got me into this customs business!

All the instruments are really fun and unique from one another, but vocals are where this baby really shines, especially during the heavily layered parts near the middle and end. Pick a part and get singin'! Bring a friend or four or twenty!

"I asked you nicely once, but I won't do that again..."

I typically consider music an artform, but today, it's a science.

This Rock Band 3 custom song, Chick Lit by We Are Scientists, is my thirty-third release and the first piece of a two-pack of songs from their Brain Thrust Mastery album hitting the database today. And believe it or not, more tunes from other albums are on the way! I mean, eventually. I cannot extrapolate an exact release date from the available data. I'm sorry, Dave.

They don't look like scientists...

We Are Scientists were never featured in my suggestions thread because this project was hatched before that thread even existed. But because of priorities, real-life, and the slow march of collaboration, it isn't until today, over a year after these customs were basically finished, that they see the light of day. Big apologies to my collaborators; markmc, whose initial efforts are what spawned this project; TomGuy, who was more than happy to contribute improvements to the instrument charts; and Whizzer, who, as usual, went above and beyond the call of duty with his attention to detail and dedication to excellence.

All instrument charts feature contributions from Whizzer, markmc, and TomGuy

In addition to the apologies, I offer my thanks! Chick Lit is a bad-ass tune and a great introduction to the band, especially when juxtaposed with the different style of After Hours, the second song of the pack. And this custom wouldn't exist without the efforts of markmc, TomGuy, and Whizzer.

To be honest, I can't remember who did what, exactly, in relation to all the instrument charts. I know I did the vocal charts and improved the improvements TomGuy made on markmc's original guitar and bass charts. Whizzer definitely applied a final coat of paint to the drum charts, after improving his own improvement upon TomGuy's improvement of markmc's drum chart. So many cooks in the kitchen! But I assure you, the final product is delicious!

Suffice to say, the drum chart for this song is intense. The bass part is intense. And the guitar chart is... well, comparatively relaxed! A great song for voxtaring, but voxbassists, beware! Hell, even playing only bass is going to be a bit challenging! This bass chart is one of the most difficult I've featured in any of my releases to date, perhaps even the most difficult. But definitely doable.

As is my wont, the venue has all the bells and whistles and should completely fool you into thinking it's an official Harmonix release. I tried to make it fittingly intense. Enjoy the spectacle as you sing the double-tracked melody featuring falsetto vocals and a backing harmony!

If you'd like to contribute improvements or animations or if you have suggestions for how I can do better, please contact me. Thanks for reading! FOR SCIENCE!

Pro guitar and pro bass by Whizzer

In addition to the apologies, I offer my thanks! After Hours is my personal favorite tune by the band and, when juxtaposed with the different style of Chick Lit, the first song of the pack, serves as a great introduction to the band.

As with Chick Lit, I can't remember who did what, exactly, in relation to all the instrument charts. I know I did the vocal charts and improved the improvements TomGuy made on markmc's original guitar and bass charts. Whizzer definitely added garnish to the cocktail, improving his own improvement upon TomGuy's improvement of markmc's drum chart. Together, we're the best bartender you can imagine. Bottoms up!

Even though this song has a laid back vibe, the drum chart is still an absolute workout. The guitar chart is very repetitive, but that only makes it a great choice to voxtar! The bass chart is solid and could also be played while singing, and dare I say it's more interesting than the guitar part. But you know what's really interesting?

An hour after I uploaded this, Whizzer decided he'd add pro guitar and pro bass upgrades. The dude's dedication is admirable but I'm near certain he's certifiably insane. So if you're a pro player, this custom is a must-download! :D

This song is near and dear to me because it's about wanting the good times to last forever. It makes me feel nostalgic and hopeful and happy when I hear it, and I'm proud to bring it to Rock Band. Gather up your friends and sing at the top of your lungs! This is the perfect capstone for your end-of-the-night setlist!

If you'd like to contribute improvements or animations or if you have suggestions for how I can do better, please contact me. Thanks for reading! Say that you'll stay...
