So, Rock Band VR was just released yesterday. What are your thoughts on the game?

I'm wondering how long until we see customs. :)

I'm playing it... I haven't tried the VR mode yet but the classic mode is pretty good, as for customs, the game's files are all in ark files, maybe when DLC releases

Ark files, you say? Like all Xbox 360 game files? Cool stuff.

Yup, but they have updated encryption/formatting, I couldn't find any tools that could open them right now, my guess is if I can find a tool that works with Amplitude (PS3) it may work here. but otherwise I feel like dlc will have to be the customs "method of attack"

@b4mv, all HMX games use ark files.

EDIT: ArchiveExplorer seems to have received an update, but i'm assuming the files within are either stored inside another container or encrypted, Tried renaming rbmid_pc to mid to see if that was a possible customs method but reaper wouldn't open it. either way, at this point i'm gonna just wait for someone who knows what they're doing.

I will buy an Oculus Rift immediately if customs become a thing for Rock Band VR.

There's a little bit of obfuscation on one of the ark files but that was not too tricky to get past. I think authoring customs for RBVR might be pretty difficult, though, unless you can make songs that just work in classic mode. Even then it will be tough, because the new "Forge" engine has completely different file formats. A midi is no longer a midi. Maybe in some alternate dimension HMX will release authoring tools.

I don't know how relevant or useful this is, but I extracted the Livin' on a Prayer mogg from RBVR and replaced it in one of my RB3 customs. The audio plays fine, but the bass gets muted when the guitar misses.

That means they're still using the same encryption and audio format from RB3. That's Harmonix for you.

It's not just that, Nemo - for whatever reason they're actually using the original mogg files for most of the songs that have been in previous games/DLC - for example, "Won't Get Fooled Again" is the same one from RB1, 36kHz sample rate and all (that and a few other songs from RB1 are 36kHz, I assume so they could fit the game on a PS2 disc better).

I'm trying to figure out what's up with the new .rbmid format, it's nothing like midi (but it has the same data in it as the old midi files, including keys charts for songs that had keys authored). Anything with .*_dta is in a format very similar to old .dtb format, with only a different array data format, but the .songdta format is a completely different format with fixed-size fields, and there's a lot of junk data there (as if they didn't zero out the structure in memory before writing to it).

Then there's .rbsong, which seems to have a lot of venue information in there, .csv which is not a comma-separated-value file but rather some kind of authoring data for freestyle, .mid which is still not a midi file, .licks which I guess has guitar lick info in it?...

Overall there is a whole lot more that goes into authoring RBVR songs compared to RB3. I bet a lot of this stuff is in RB4 too, in case customs ever become possible there, so it is definitely worth looking into. Now I just need to get a VR headset so I can start playing this game...

Do what I did, I'm not gonna spend $600 just to play one game.

I was planning on getting a Vive anyway, and I think that with Revive, some configuration changes, and some duct tape, I can get it to work. And there are plenty of other fun VR games that I've played which make the price more worth it.

The Vive and Revive work great for Rock Band VR. You can even use the touch controller holder with a Vive Wand and with tweaking in advanced settings, it works fantastic.

Can't wait to hopefully see customs take off in RBVR.
