Here is an updated tutorial for how to play customs on Xbox 360 since the other written/video tutorials are outdated.

================================
What you need:

  • Xbox 360: OS Version 2.0.17349.0 or higher (any update after April 30th, 2015)
  • Physical copy of Rock Band 3 with EA logo on it. (Downloadable version and Disc with MadCatz logo won't work)
  • Flash drive
  • C3 CON Tools

================================

Initial Setup

1. Plug your flash drive into your 360 and turn it on.

2. On the 360's menu go to the Settings section then "System" > "Storage".

  • Go to USB Storage Device, press Y for "Device Options" and select "Format".

3. Next select your Hard Drive and navigate to "Games and Apps" > "Rock Band".

  • If you see "Rock Band 3 Title Update #5" delete it*. If you don't see it that's fine it just means you never downloaded the update.
  • [*OPTIONAL] If you plan on playing online (only purchased official DLC), instead of deleting Title Update #5, plug in a second formatted flash drive and move it onto there. Then you will be able to swap between a flash drive for customs and a flash drive for online play.
  • Unplug your flash drive, and plug it into your computer.

4. On your computer launch C3 CON Tools and click the "RBtoUSB" button.

  • Click "File" then "Open USB Drive".
  • Select your flash drive from the Drive Selector.
  • Click "Tools" then "Copy TU4 to drive".

Adding customs to your flash drive

1. Launch C3 CON Tools and click the "RBtoUSB" button.

  • Click "File" then "Open USB Drive".
  • Select your flash drive from the Drive Selector.

2. Add songs by right clicking and selecting "Add files..." or by dragging the songs right into the RBtoUSB window.

  • After the songs finish transfering, close RBtoUSB.

3. Plug your flash drive back into your 360, turn it on, and enjoy playing Rock Band 3 custom songs :D

  • If you are still connected to the internet it will tell you an update is required for Rock Band 3. Just press B or select "Cancel".

You don't have to convert them. The files you download go on your USB drive, using RBtoUSB from C3 CON Tools.

I know I'm like 3 years late, but I finally decided to look into putting custom songs into RB3. Me, my wife and my daughter still like to play RB from time to time and have done so for the last 8 yea

Hey guys just a quick question I've added over 500 custom songs but I realized that I get no animations from the characters on the stage..they just stand and do nothing and the band mates just slowly walk into the crowd and stuff.. How can I solve this issue? Thanks

Where did you get those customs from? The ones you tried at least. Sometimes people release customs like that where the people on stage don't do anything.

If you were trying C3 releases then that definitely shouldn't be happening and you might be on the wrong Title Update for Rock Band 3. Are you using Title Update 4? I was told that if you are using Title Update 3 then that could be what's causing that.

No, you do not have it. What you are describing is a textbook example of not having TU4. You may think you have TU4, hell, you may have a file that calls itself TU4, but you do not have TU4. RBtoUSB includes it...sort files on your USB by type and remove all title update file(s) you may have. Then click on Tools -> Copy TU4 to drive. Done.

It could also be that your tu4 got corrupted and is ignored. That's happened to me twice for no apparent reason. Copy again and it's fixed.

If I look on my storage in my dashboard I do see a corrupted file but never knew what it was. I used party buffalo to inject the songs and title update 4 or supposedly. Is that the only file I should be deleting or the whole folder where I injected it? Then I just go to C3 and do it from there basically starting over?

Ok, so I've followed the instructions (twice) to the T, and selecting B or cancel here just backs the game out and I land at the 360 dashboard. What gives? I haven't tried yet unplugging the network or something like that, but I'd rather not TBH since I still use the xbox for other things.

The update is of course for TU5. I've tried letting it complete, going back to the storage dash, and moving it over to USB just to manually delete it on the PC just as the original instructions thought... no dice.

Really not sure why it's not working for you. I followed the tutorial before I posted it to make sure it worked and even tried it again just now after seeing your post.

When I hit B, the update notice just goes away and continues with the game

I really don't understand why people choose to follow different paths than the one we laid out years ago and that works everytime. One stick for TU4, one stick for TU5, only things on the HDD are the official DLC.

I figured a majority of people wouldn't bother with TU5 anymore after getting involved with playing customs.

Anyway, I just added an optional step to setup a second flash drive with TU5.

Under settings somewhere on dashboard there was a feature that was added on latest dash regarding updates disconnecting from live etc can't exactly remember what the option was as i only play 360 at my mates now but check for this and change it to the opposite option and it will work

No, I understand that and I really appreciate the effort of posting info on the new system, it's just that instead of just replacing the step of copying over files, which is the only thing different from the time we created the full length tutorial, you started from scratch, and some of the important aspects of customs installation we covered got lost, including the 2 keys system. ;)

Interesting, I will look into this.

Regarding TU4 vs TU5 sticks, I may not fully understand - if I have a stick with TU5 (I don't really need it since I'm getting into customs), does that trick the xbox into thinking that I have the TU5 updated somewhere so that it doesn't attempt to force-install? Or is my Xbox rare in that it's behaving as described above.

I definitely appreciate all the feedback and particularly the forum posts. I'd been dicking around with customs for a month or two now and while getting it to work was always sporadic the most frustrating part was scouring through the internet and this forum looking for the latest and correct method now that Party Buffalo appears to be out of the picture. So thanks, gents/ladies!

Alright so that's all I had to do - in the 360's System Settings there was an auto-downloads function turned on. I never saw the need to disable it, but that's all I had to do in order to be given a choice to both back out of an update as well as pick a storage location.

Sucks I'll have to select it each time, but oh well. Thanks for the help!

It's not a "trick". The XBox 360 looks at all attached storage to determine what updates, DLC and save files are available for the game currently running. If you have TU5 on an attached USB stick, the game will see it and use it. If you have TU4 on an attached USB stick (presumably a different stick), the game will see it and use that instead. If you have both TU4 and TU5 on attached storage, TU5 will trump TU4, and TU4 may get deleted (not entirely sure how that process works, but at any rate, only TU5 will take affect).

Create a new, local-only user account without an XBox Live membership. As long as you log in with that user, the game will never look for updates and never prompt you to download TU5. You can then switch user accounts the same way you switch memory sticks when you feel like playing online, posting scores to the leaderboards, or doing anything else that requires TU5 and network access.
