Let me be another passenger on the "nope" train.
It's not entirely Harmonix's fault but I am also one of the many that is all invested with songs and instruments with Xbox360 and have no intentions of starting from scratch (no desire to buy an XboxOne).
The game could be mind blowing with graphics, songs, features, etc. but it is not worth the price of the new admission. As much as I love the series, I will be stuck in the past playing my current library and customs until there is a major price cut years down the road.

Keys are fun, but they were in no way a deal breaker. I've known how to play the piano since I was younger, and my drive for keys in RB was never that high for some reason. Felt different playing on there, and the interface just didn't sit well with me.

Agreed 100% about keys. When they were announced I was excited and pre-ordered the keys bundle, but it just never did it for me.

I'm wondering about the people quitting the franchise because of keys and how they came to the conclusion.

As a drummer and singer, I'm very much looking forward to Rock Band 4. The fact that we'll still have pro drums and harmonies makes me a happy camper.

But, my excitement is tempered by the fact that I'm losing my favorite instrument. I wrote a couple of long, rambling posts about it in the official forums, which you can read here and here, if you're into long, rambling posts (login may be required). The slightly shorter summaries are, losing keys hurts because those of us who prefer keys are getting pushed back to the back of the bus after finally getting a chance to prove keys are as integral to rock music (and country, and most especially modern pop) as drums and guitars and flamboyant singers. Losing keys also hurts because, for all we're being teased about RB4 having new features, it still feels like a step back, because it seems that Harmonix is deviating from their path of musical education. Every game in the Harmonix catalog up to Rock Band 3 and Fantasia: Music Evolved seemed to place a greater emphasis on not only interacting with music, but learning what it really takes to create music, from keeping the rhythm to playing an instrument to assembling that perfect mix. With RB4, the spotlight on learning isn't there any more, at least not any more than it was already in previous games. It's understandable why, but it's still a darn shame.

Maybe the shortest TL;DR version is, some of us want RB4 to be a sequel to RB3, not just a sequel to RB2.

FujiSkunk has pretty much taken the words directly out of my mouth.

I don't play much keys, but I love the music associated with them. No keys likely means no ELP, or Supertramp, or Genesis... (Not that we NEED any more Genesis (Thank You Farottone, et al) )

Well, you get the idea.

I half agree with this, but it's a double edged sword at the same time. Yes, it sucks that they will probably be tuning away from more key leading/heavy songs, but it's also less of a pigeon hole as well. Remember, the DID do enough key songs during the DLC of RB1 and 2, or the audience wouldn't have realized they wanted a key instrument. We had a lot of key strong songs, it just wasn't the first thought.

The other half of the sword came from after RB3 was release. The setlist for RB3 basically had to ALL have keys, to promote their new instrument. The first year of DLC after RB3 was a lot of key songs... because they had this new instrument that needed songs.

I enjoyed getting a variety of songs, but I feel like post RB3 was filled with Key heavy songs on purpose, which limited the selection. Towards the end they started fading away and releasing weeks without key songs, but the point is still there.

Without keys, we get a BROADER selection and still some key songs, but you will realize you are missing keys. With keys, you get the extra instrument and can have more key leading songs... but it will also narrow the song selection field to appease key players. Works both ways. As a drummer mainly and guitarist on the side, I'm happy for RB4. In the end I don't care what they do... I just want score duel back lol

Keys or no keys, I'll be hoping for a more versatile band make up. I think we are due having an actual rhythm guitar on stage along with all the familiar instruments. They can draw from more resources (songs) with this new option. Also it will handle more players onstage at the same time with the improved horsepower. I will be on the fence until we hear anything. Regardless, I will never put away my customs ps3. :D
It's only plastic rock... but I like it.

In my dream world Rock Band 4 would have Guitar exactly as we already have, Rhythm guitar, bass guitar, keyboard, drums, and 3 part harmonies. All keeping proper score for everyone while a Stage Kit keeps us in the mood. Go big or don't go lol

I'll be buying a PS4 for Rock Band 4 no matter what they do but I can have my wishlist.

Well unfortunately, the XBox One can only have 8 "controllers" attached to it at once which would once again cut out the stage kit. But one can hope!

Weighing in, because why the hell not.

I'm forced to see this from the perspective of the guy who brings Rock Band to conventions, in addition to someone who deals in customs. People are going to want to play it, and I'm "the Rock Band guy", so I'm going to inevitably have to shell out money for the logical console (Xbone, since I bought everything for 360) that I have no personal interest in aside from RB. Do I run two competing setups and have to deal with even more of a volume war with other games? Do I leave RB4 home in favor of a bunch of customs, and risk people complaining about not getting to try the new one? Do I leave the 360 home in favor of new songs, and let down the people who want to play keys/a bunch of fun customs people have spent time making?

I'm excited to see the new setlist and trying not to be too jaded from you guys releasing these awesome songs I always wanted but never officially got. I'm curious how they're going to bring back a story/tour mode to make people stop whining about that. I'm wondering if the setlist is going to be gimped in favor of "Buy DLC and make your own RB4!".

Edit -- RB's Twitter said harms aren't confirmed yet, correct me if I'm wrong.

wow, well okay then. i could have sworn in like their IGN interview about the RB4 announcement that they said they are in for sure. if this game doesn't have harmonies then, wow, no buy for me as i'm already frustrated by lack of keys/pro modes.

Skipping harmonies wouldn't get me over the new console hump.

Well shoot, I thought I also remembered them confirming at E3 or shortly after that harmonies would be in the new game.

I'd still buy the new game even without them, but it's almost as if Harmonix wants to make me think really hard about it.

Admittedly, I was a little disappointed there won't be pro keys, but so far I'm looking forward to it. However, if they were to come out and say it won't have online versus mode then there's a good chance I may not pick it up, unless of course the set list is really really good.

I for one was a special case when RB3 came out i preordered the key and game bundle but had not yet even owned a ps3. I had all the games for ps2 and had played the shit out of em. And here i am again with no current gen console and another RB release...but i wont be purchasing it. i wont be getting it because i dont have the money this time around and i cant justify getting a system for just one game. the only thing remotely interesting is the next installment of kingdom hearts and thats about it. To me it seems the gaming industry has been pretty lackluster and thats saying alot im not a casual gamer here.

Okay, trying to be optimistic.

Maybe they're pulling a Tony Hawk HD, starting at the basics with a heavy coat of gloss, and will gradually put things back in? We just have to be patient and give them money first.

Given that we had some tension yesterday I want to be very clear on this: it's a genuine question about your habits, I have no interest in criticizing people not buying the game, I'm just curious about the thought process. So...

I'm wondering about the people quitting the franchise because of keys and how they came to the conclusion. Have you only played RB3 because the previous games didn't have keys or did you come to gradually only play keys with RB3 making the other instruments not interesting anymore? Or is it more of a "with no full band experience it's not worth it anymore for me" thing? Does this also mean that apart from RB3 customs your foray in the rhythm games world is over or will you transition to dance or Blitz-like games or to other games that offer some kind of support for keys?

Honestly, it's more because of me not wanting to spend the money on a PS4/XONE only for RB4. Also, I would be more interested in a PS4 instead of an Xbox this time around (XONE doesn't seem to be worth it in my opinion) meaning I will be using a PSN account. So would also have to rebuy not only instruments but also songs that I owned on my X360.

Lastly, large chance of customs NOT working on RB4 in the first place.

Removal of keys themselves makes it that much worse really for me.

~Edit~

Really, if RB4 was the only thing I needed to buy and I can easily use the songs which I owned on Blitz/RB3 then I wouldn't mind getting it but due to how things usually work and which new-gen-console I'm leaning toward... I don't see that happening for me.

Rawr! I'm a fluffy space raptor!

Rock Band 2.5, guys. You heard it here first. Let's undo all innovations to the genre and just release the same game from 6 years ago. And you can play all your downgraded DLC too.
