LATEST UPDATE 10/17 - Iced Earth - Night of the Stormrider ALBUM UPDATE

I believe this was my first attempt at a pack and full band charting almost 5 years ago. I like to think I've improved in the interim so all instruments and vocals have been updated for this occasion. All songs except for Path I Choose and Mystical End feature Matt Barlow on vocals. Enjoy!

Hot Rats was also the first time Zappa focused his efforts in one general area, namely jazz-rock. The result is a classic of the genre. Hot Rats' genius lies in the way it fuses the compositional sophistication of jazz with rock's down-and-dirty attitude -- there's a real looseness and grit to the three lengthy jams, and a surprising, wry elegance to the three shorter, tightly arranged numbers (particularly the sumptuous "Peaches en Regalia").

Perhaps the biggest revelation isn't the straightforward presentation, or the intricately shifting instrumental voices in Zappa's arrangements -- it's his own virtuosity on the electric guitar, recorded during extended improvisational workouts for the first time here. His wonderfully scuzzy, distorted tone is an especially good fit on "Willie the Pimp," with its greasy blues riffs and guest vocalist Captain Beefheart's Howlin' Wolf theatrics.

"Son of Mr. Green Genes" keeps the original melody of Mr. Green Genes over a jazzier, sunnier musical background.

Opening on a round double bass line, "Little Umbrellas," is a delicate medium-tempo instrumental piece. Nicely arranged with piano, clarinet, and even a recorder part.

"The Gumbo Variations" is a studio jam session. A basic drum beat, a wobbling bass line, a simple melodic frame, and the stage was set for the three main soloists of the day. First, Ian Underwood delivers one of the best saxophone solos he recorded for Zappa: crossing over to free jazz, he steals the spotlight for seven whole minutes. Violinist Sugar Cane Harris comes in next, followed by Zappa himself. There you have it: a straightforward rock jam featuring gifted improvisers. Of course, "The Gumbo Variations" is far from the usual material the man put out, but then Hot Rats is not your typical Zappa record. This piece is one of the reasons why so many people who usually hate the guitarist agree on the qualities of the album.

The closing track is “It Must Be a Camel” is more jazz than fusion, and is noteworthy for the great performances of Bennett and Guerin on bass and drums respectively.

After 50 years Hot Rats still sizzles; few albums originating on the rock side of jazz-rock fusion flowed so freely between both sides of the equation, or achieved such unwavering excitement and energy.

Oh heck, I just realized Too High gives album sorting to Innervisions!

what do you mean?

I mean that if you own the officially released DLC songs "Higher Ground" and "Living for the City," that they, along with your custom should make 3 songs from that album, the number that appear album-sorted in game.

It's not a big thing, but I like seeing it.

There is a real embarrassment of riches with drum customs today. Awesome to see more from Bruce and Stevie, even if it's not stuff I'm familiar with.

Great update. Mastodon usually never disappoints on drums. I already had a custom of Capillarian Crest but don't remember if it had pro markers or not. I know a few of the Mastodon customs I have doesn't have pro markers so will be great to get rid of them with your versions.

Is the guitar chart on capillarian crest a new creation or a convert from an old chart?

I have a guitar/drum custom of it already, and I only want to play guitar, and I'm not sure if they're two different versions or you only changed the drums or something

circle of cysquatch doesn't seem to work, says the song data is unavailable/restarts the session. maybe that's just me though

the part before the solo in crystal skull with scott kelly is charted wrong but that's just a fanboy complaint, i doubt many will notice or care :). nice work though man, it's especially nice to have a single pedal version of capillarian crest since I'm still stuck with just one

circle of cysqatch is messed up. I had it working in single pedal but now its not. I'm going to work on it. I'll take a look at Crystal skull. Accuracy is paramount :)

it's not too off, just missing a bit of accuracy on the toms. there's a vid on youtube of brann playing it, at the start here

also shows him playing capillarian crest's bridge which is badass as hell

Thanks for the great new stuff. :) One quick thing: please don't use the Convert badge for conversion from customs, that badge is intended for songs converted from other official games/releases. ;)
