Looks like Pro Keys were really "done" for Expert only. Anything lower than that is just one note repeated throughout...bummed about that.

Yep. I don't have any idea how to do pro keys reductions. I only chart pro keys when I have a very accurate MIDI or tab for keys, and then I use that for expert only. Seems weird to chart pro keys that aren't completely accurate.

If someone knows how to reduce pro keys, give me a lesson, and I can try. Frankly, it is a pain to make up fake charts to fill in the other levels.

Doing the same reductions I did for regular keys usually work on easier songs for me. Essentially it's the same chart as regular keys, just with a wider range of notes.

It's the same basic rules: take notes away. Read the docs.

Bloom send me the chart and I'll give it a go bud.

Some guidelines I generally follow:

  • Reduce the 5-lane keys charts first, following all the rules as given in the authoring docs.
  • For all lower difficulties on pro keys, match the rhythm given by the same difficulty's 5-lane keys chart. Don't shift any notes (yet) and don't prune any additional notes (yet).

Then, for the notes that remain...

  • For easy and medium pro-keys, pick a keyboard range and octave-shift notes as necessary to fit in that range. You'll usually either want the range that starts the song or the range that appears the most often in the song. Don't forget to remove all lane-change markers after the first.
  • For hard pro-keys, boil any four-note chords down to three notes and make sure the highest and lowest notes are no more than 11 semitones apart (a semitone is just the next key on the keyboard, white or black).
  • For medium pro-keys, boil any chords down to two notes and make sure they are no more than 9 semitones apart. Most of the time you will want one of those notes to be the root of the chord (turn a C-major chord into C-E or C-G, for example).
  • For easy pro-keys, boil any chords down to a single note. 99% of the time you can boil it down to the root of the chord and nobody will think ill of you for it.
  • Prune or octave-shift additional notes to ensure there are no quick jumps beyond what is recommended in the authoring docs. For hard that is 11 semitones, 9 semitones for medium and 7 semitones for easy. You may also need to prune or shift notes in chords for this to work.
  • For hard pro-keys, double-check the lane-change markers to make sure none have become unnecessary after pruning and shifting notes.

This doesn't cover every case and of course you should take care to keep the "feel" of the song even at lower difficulties. But this should be plenty to get started.

If you're not familiar with chords enough to know what the root of a chord would be and you don't have sheet music to tell you what the song's chords are, you can look up chord charts online and match the notes you see with the right chord. The order of the notes won't matter: both E-G-C and C-E-G are C-major chords, for example. In some cases there will be multiple chords with the same notes, and in those cases it can hard to figure out the root of the chord without listening to the surrounding chords and knowing a little more music theory. Fortunately such chords are rare, especially in pop music, and if one does turn up you can usually just pick whichever note or notes "feel" the best and it will be good enough for the game.

Boy have I got some great songs for you this month. Even better, three outstanding authors are helping out, so you get good music, and high quality.

First up, my favorite Cream song:

This chart started out as a drums only Frets on Fire chart by Blitzbob. I added guitar to it quite a while ago, and finally got around to making it full band. Fantastic song - enjoy.

Next, another Bond theme:

The rest of the stuff for June are a five-pack from the Kill Bill soundtracks. Be sure to download Farottone's chart for Goodnight Moon, and make this an even half-dozen. Then set up two TV's, one for the movie, one for Rock Band, and throw a party.

Vocals done by Nyxyxylyth.

This is a magical, haunting song, with covers done by many artists, including Vanilla Fudge. However, the original is probably the best. Great work by Nyx on vocals, as usual.

This one is tough, especially on guitar. I can get three stars, barely. If anyone can FC this one, let me know.

Drums by Ajfone23.

Best song from the albums - you got to grab this one.

Another lovely tune. Hard to believe someone can make pan flutes sound so powerful.

Last up, from Volume 2,

This one has still another fantastic drum chart from Ajfone. Thanks, man.

Wow, great releases. I'm not immediately familiar with all of those Kill Bill songs, so I'll really look forward to playing them. When is HMX going to release a pan flute peripheral???

Two random notes:

1) The album art for "White Room" looks super pixellated...possible to post with a higher def image?

2) "For Your Eyes Only" is a top 3 Bond theme song, IMO (I'd put "Live and Let Die" and "A View to a Kill" up there, too). Awesome!

Wow.... I have been *sort of* following this thread, but this is a complete surprise. I wish I was home right now so I could play these! Stupid needing to work for money so I can afford electricity to play Rock Band! ARGH!

Thanks for putting in the hard work to bring us all amazing songs.

My favourite Bond theme will always been "You Know My Name" by Chris Cornell, which is a controversial pick :P

Whoa! People having different opinions about music??!??!?! That NEVER happens! ;)

(p.s. I think the song itself is pretty good, but the opening credits for "Casino Royale" which features this song...images plus music...is pretty incredible, IMO)

Kill Bill was full of songs you might not know by name but you'll definitely recognize when you hear them, particularly "Battle without Honor or Humanity" and "The Lonely Shepherd".

Yes, Youtubed them both, and both are instantly recognizable.

Wait, Chris Cornell did that theme? As in, Soundgarden and Audioslave Chris Cornell?

I have to listen to that theme again. Actually, I currently have the entire chronological Bond collection on my queue to watch so I'll get to it eventually.

I'm not sure what my favorite is, but I actually really like "Skyfall". Having that quiet piano opening after Bond falls into the river followed by Adele's awesome voice swelling up into an awesome orchestral-rock piece makes an awesome Bond opening.

Had anyone had issues with "For Your Eyes Only"?

•The vocals seem like they're off...my singer was nailing that song but getting a bunch of "Okays". She can normally gold star something like this.

•I've seen this a few times before, so I'm not sure of the reason, but a lot of the notes were appearing outside of the lanes on Pro Keys (i.e., floating out in space). Is this because of the way the song is charted or something else? Makes it very difficult to play.
