Originally a Motown hit for Brenda Holloway in 1967 (it reached number 39), this song was brought into the Blood, Sweat & Tears repertoire by group founder Al Kooper, shortly before he was asked to leave the band. However, this fabulous arrangement certainly has many Kooper arrangement trademarks, most notably the multiple keyboard fills (it really does sound like Kooper's playing organ on this record), as well as the fabulous, laid-back coda. The song itself is a well-crafted soul-pop confection and would have been perfect for almost any vocal vehicle in the Motown stable, such as Diana Ross. BS&T, though, made the song their own, resulting in a number two record in spring of 1969.
