While "Vandebilt" was being recorded in Lagos, Nigeria, the studio suffered a power outage but recording continued on a backup generator. McCartney wanted to record this record in an exotic locale, which did not sit well with guitarist Henry McCullough and drummer Denny Selwell, who quit the group before departure. With no time to recruit replacements, he entered the studio only with his wife Linda and multi-instrumentalist Denny Laine.
Charlie Chester of the English Music Hall fame provided the opening line from his catchphrase "Down in the jungle, living in a tent, better than a bungalow, no rent!" The forced laughter that closed the track was recorded in London's AIR studios upon their return. "It was great listening to a roomful of people laughing in stereo. They were getting into all these laughing bits, and we were on the floor."
