Author Notes

The release of a new Hip album was always big news and a highly anticipated event in Canada.  However- their 14th album, Man Machine Poem, came with both anticipation and sadness.  We all knew it was likely to be their final studio album, in light of lead singer Gord Downie's diagnosis of incurable brain cancer, which was announced the preceeding winter.
"World Possessed" was written possibly at the same time he was given the final diagnosis - the sentiment seems to fly between jumping to conclusions, paranoia, fear, irrational thought. Just give me the news.  It can all be lies.  Nothing is what it seems. Everything is fine.
Gord passed on October 17, 2017.

The album was in the can before Gord's diagnosis, in fact. Chances are the references in the lyrics are relevant to his wife's own cancer diagnosis a few years before, which also fueled a lot of the writing on Now For Plan A, or to the impending death of his father (who passed just before Gord got sick), who had also figured into a lot of Gord's later lyrics (eg. The Last Recluse). Also, he was just a damn good writer who tended toward dark subject matter.

Love this song. Love this album. Sad for what it promised might have been.
