Recorded in seven takes, it's one of the most frantic rockers in the entire Beatles' catalog. McCartney claimed that the song and vocal style were influenced by Little Richard, "I used to sing his stuff but there came a point when I wanted one of my own." As the song concludes he can be heard repeating the phrase "Plastic soul, man, plastic soul" which was later adapted for the album Rubber Soul, was actually a phrase used by black musicians to describe Mick Jagger.
"I'm Down" was used to close concerts in their final year as a live act, and was Paul's opening number for his set at The Concert for New York City following the September 11 attacks.
This song is a part of C3X.
