"Happiness" is a miniature history of rock and roll, a three-part structure that Lennon described as "the Dirty Old Man", "the Junkie" and "the Gunman". Now masters of studio production, the composition contained several changes in time signature, its subject was lyrically playful with half-baked poeticism and interjections of "Bang bang shoot shoot".
1968's May issue of the NRA's monthly magazine National Rifleman may have inspired the title, but consider the tragic irony of John Lennon having written a song titled "Happiness is a Warm Gun" and then, following his fatal shooting in December 1980, becoming the 'most high profile' of the many musicians who have died as a result of the wide availability of guns in the United States.
